University studentsThis January around 8 of the youngsters from the Orphans Project have gained places in university. They will be studying a range of different topics including Pure Maths, Agricultural Machinery, Economics and Banking. Elie, who graduated last year is now doing a Masters in Economics in Malaysia. |
Start of new school year - 2010The term begins at the start of February 2010 and most of the departments are geared up to teach the new students. The carpentry department is short of a teacher and so we are looking for someone to teach this important skill. The catering department is not yet ready to accept students and so we hope to start teaching after Easter. |
Kitchen completedDuring the summer the kitchen area was built to start the new department teaching catering. Most of the kitchen came out in flat pack form purchased from Howdens in the UK. The container bringing it took a while to be released from customs but when it did Alan and Dave were able to construct the kitchen in 2 weeks. |
University GraduatesIt is always good when children make progress in education and we are very happy to see 17 of our orphans currently studying in University. Last March Elie became the first to graduate with a degree in Economics from Université Libre de Kigali (ULK). He looked splendid in his graduation clothes and we were all very proud of him. He is now employed in a micro-finance bank giving loans for small projects. |
New Department for 2010In summer 2009 we plan to install a kitchen area in preparation for the new Hotel and Restaurant Department. The kitchen equipment has been purchased from Howdens and is being transported by container from the UK to Rwanda. We thank Allan Scott, who has helped the school over the past 2 years and will again be helping the school by overseeing the installation of this new area. Once completed it will be an area where training can take place for young people who would like to find employment in Hotels, Restaurants or in private homes. At the start of this year the Electrical Installation Department was opened for students and there are now 11 young people studying this subject. With Rwanda developing so well more and more people benefitting from electricity in their homes, our students should be able to find employment once they have completed their studies. The other departments of tailoring, welding, IT are going well however the teaching of carpentry has temporarily stopped with the absence of a teacher. This department should be back teaching once a new staff member has been found. |
