Started back in 1991, the Rwanda Orphans Project has helped children from over 200 families and currently supports around 500 orphans in the capital city of Rwanda, Kigali.
The main problem that has led to the huge number of orphans is the AIDS epidemic that currently infects around 25% of the adults in the capital, but back in 1994 the genocide of more than 800,000 Rwandese also resulted in many families being without one or both parents. There are therefore currently many hundreds of thousands of orphans who need support.
