The project works in five areas of Kigali: Cyahafi, Muhima, Kimisagara, Gikondo and Gatsata. The social workers who live in the areas for which they have responsibility, are also a part of the project either as foster parents or widows. They visit the families and ensure that they are making good progress bringing back any problems to the monthly staff meeting. It is also their responsibility to propose any new families that need support as sponsors become available.
Sponsorship not only helps with a monthly cash payment but also provides a balance from which education costs and medical needs can be supplied. As the balance on the orphans account grows it then provides a source of finance for help with house repairs or small commercial schemes. At the end of education or once the child reaches the age of sixteen and is out of school he or she is encouraged to look for employment and the balance remaining in the account is given over to help in this.
