About Rwanda

Nestled in the heart of Africa is the beautiful land of Rwanda. Named “the land of a thousand hills” it is around the size of Wales in the UK and covered from north to south with hilly terrain. The northern border is a string of dormant volcanoes where live the last remaining 400 mountain gorillas brought to our attention by the film “Gorillas in the Mist”. The climate makes Rwanda an attractively fertile land and this has led to it being the most densely populated land in Africa.

Being originally colonised by the Germans it became a part of the Belgian administered lands, along with Congo, following the first world war. Joined with Burundi as Rwanda-Urundi the countries separated at independence in 1961. The events of 1994 shook the world as almost one million people were slaughtered in the genocide and two and a half million people fled into exile in Congo and Tanzania. The past ten years have seen a remarkable recovery in the country with much progress being made.
